Time to be kind to your skin? Try Zao Organic Make-up

In my teenage years, I based my make-up buying decisions solely on color and price. If it was bright, sparkly and cheap it was good enough for me. I knew nothing of make-up brushes or sponges, instead preferring to apply make up - sometimes even eyeshadow and blush – with my fingers. Tut, tut. Thankfully, while I’m still drawn to the odd sparkly eye shadow or shimmery lip gloss, if my twenties (and all those years spent playing with make up) have taught me anything it’s that less is definitely more, and cheap is rarely good – I’m looking at you, plastic-smelling sticky drug store lip gloss.

Do cheap foundations cause your skin problems?

Since then, my make-up buying habits have altered dramatically. I’m no longer piling cheap foundations and make-up bases on my blemish-prone skin, instead opting for lighter, mineral-based products which aren’t pore-blocking. And I’ve really noticed a difference in my complexion. Do you buy and use make-up in the same way? I know many of my colleagues do…

So when natural cosmetics brand Zao got in touch with us here at NaturalCures to see if we fancied trying a few of the brand’s organic products, we were all eager to give them a go.

Above are just a few of the brand’s cosmetic line-up, including richly pigmented lipsticks, stunning pearly eye shadows, and dense kabuki brushes for sweeping a hint of colour on the cheeks. We received Zao’s black mascara and a pretty Pearly Eye Shadow in the shade garnet – and what struck us initially as we unboxed the products was how gorgeous its packaging was. I’ve seen some luxurious product packaging in my time – that’ll be the years spent scouring the shelves of my local drug store for new cosmetic finds to spend my pocket money on – but nothing as unique and lovely as this.

Bamboo packaging in simple linen outer bags

Each product comes in a simple linen bag with ribbon drawstrings but it’s the product inside that really wows. The eye shadow packaging, in particular, was lovely – bamboo pots with magnets for that satisfying snap shut-effect.

But of course, let’s not get carried away with the packaging alone – I know I usually do. What were the products like?

My colleague and senior writer Virginia tried the pearly eyeshadow in 104 Pearly Garnet and said: “I have to be really careful what I use on my eyes, but this felt so gentle and wonderful, and the colour really made my eyes pop. And the packaging is so pretty I put it out in my bathroom.”

Non-clumpy, natural-looking lashes

One of NaturalCures’ designers gave the black mascara a go, and added: “The packaging’s lovely and the product itself was light and offered easy application, without any clumps. And someone in the office asked if I’d been to the eyelash bar for a treatment, I was so pleased. It made my eye lashes look really long and natural. It was really easy to remove, too. ”

Me? Well I’ve already got my eye on quite a few Zao products – I’m sure they’ll be making their way into my make-up bag very soon.
